-- LASIK --

How do I know if I am a candidate for LASIK?
We recommend you come in for a complimentary consultation with our laser vision counselor. We can begin determining if you are a good candidate by checking your glasses, evaluating your vision, and taking a picture of your corneal surface. If you are a good candidate, you'll have an opportunity to watch an educational video on laser vision correction, discuss your vision with our laser vision counselor and meet Dr. Stacy Wood.

How successful is LASIK?
Dr. Wood has been doing refractive surgery since 1992. He has been trained by the lading refractive surgeons in the nation. Virtually all of Dr. Wood's LASIK patients are 20/40 or better. This is good enough to pass a driver's exam in most states. In addition, more than 95% of Dr. Wood's LASIK patients see 20/25 or better.

How safe is the LASIK procedure?
Dr. Wood uses specific criteria to determine who is an appropriate candidate for LASIK. Using these guidelines, Dr. Wood minimizes the chances of a less than desirable outcome.

What is the cost of LASIK? And will my insurance cover it?
We make LASIK affordable to all of our patients. Our global fee for LASIK includes the facility fee, post-operative visits and one year of complete care. If needed, enhancement procedures are also included. If you have concerns about paying for your surgery, you may choose one of our monthly payment plans. We offer "Zero Down" and "Interest Free" options with approved credit. If you have insurance that covers refractive surgery, let us know, and we will contact them to make the arrangements.

What if I blink during the LASIK procedure?
A small device is used to keep your eyelids open and to prevent you from blinking. You will not be able to blink and hurt yourself or your visual outcome.

What if I don't keep looking at the green light?
Dr. Wood will be looking at the center of your eye throughout the entire laser procedure. At any time Dr. Wood may ask you to refixate on the green light. The laser is designed to pick up where it left off, therefore, there is no loss of visual outcome.

How much experience does Dr. Wood have?
Dr. Wood has been doing refractive surgery since 1992. He has done numerous procedures in RK, PRK and LASIK. He has been trained by the leading refractive surgeons in the nation. Dr. Wood also incorporates refractive surgery into his cataract surgery. Eliminating astigmatism at the time of surgery allows patients to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses.

How long will the LASIK procedure take?
On treatment day, you should plan on being at the laser center for approximately one hour. You will be in the treatment room for approximately 20 minutes. LASIK takes approximately five minutes per eye with the actual laser treatment time lasting less than thirty seconds. Your family or friends are invited to wait for you in the laser suite. Someone should be available to drive you home. Should you need transportation, ask about our courtesy van.

Is LASIK painful?
It is unlikely that you will experience any pain during the procedure because of the effective numbing eye drops that are used. Following the procedure, it is possible to experience a slight stinging and/or gritty sensation. These symptoms are temporary and usually disappear in a few hours.

When will my vision improve?
Most LASIK patients notice an immediate improvement, others notice an improvement after several hours and some notice the improvement the next day. The vast majority of patients have functional vision on the first or second day.

Do the results from LASIK last?
Your vision improvement is considered to be permanent. It is highly unlikely you would need any additional treatment after laser vision correction. However, if additional treatment is necessary and is recommended by Dr. Wood, it is performed at no charge to you. It is important to know that laser vision correction does not prevent age related conditions from occurring such as the need for reading glasses.

Are there any risks with LASIK?
There have been no reported cases of blindness from laser vision correction. But, as with any kind of surgical treatment, there are always risk and complication possibilities that will be thoroughly explained at your visit. Complication rate for laser vision correction is less than 1%.

Is financing available?
Yes, there are financing plans available including flexible monthly payment plans. Our laser vision counselor can give you all the details at your complimentary consultation.

Can I talk with someone who has had LASIK?
Absolutely! Our patients love bragging about their new vision and are happy to share their experience with people considering laser vision correction.

When can I swim?
Dr. Wood recommends that you avoid getting the eye wet for 2 weeks.

Will I ever have to wear glasses again?
Most people, whether they have had LASIK or not, will need reading glasses as they reach their 40's. LASIK does not prevent the natural aging process of the eye. Since the majority of Dr. Wood's LASIK patients achieve 20/40 vision or better, very few have chosen to wear glasses or contact lenses. Should they choose correction, it is generally for driving at night or for reading.

Can I have both eyes treated at the same time?
The majority of Dr. Wood's patients elect to have both eyes treated at the same time.

Does LASIK correct astigmatism?
Yes. Dr. Wood corrects his patients' astigmatism during the LASIK procedure. Dr. Wood also can correct astigmatism for cataract patients using a limbal relaxing procedure at the time of cataract surgery.
